When looking at the title of this little preview you might have done the same thing as me and wondered what late troubadour Elliott Smith had to do with a dance company. On further inspection though, it turned out I was reading wrong and the name is coincidental. Instead of dancing to Smith’s lo-fi, melancholic alt-rock and folk, the company actually put on something just a little bit more exciting: their own innovative original works. On their latest Spring Tour, they’re bringing three of their latest works to the Holy Biscuit to show off their immense talent and make everyone’s inner dancer want to burst on to the stage.

Kicking off their programme is Inner Retreival, which was initially funded by the Arts Coucnil. Although the original choreography called for three dancers, the performance has been stripped back to just the one. Scored by Japanese Kodo music and compositions by James MacMillan, the performance is set to be a raw experience and a showcase of what a single human body can do. Also on the bill is one of Smith’s earlier dance works, Of Gods And Men, which is being performed solo by a female dancer for the first time, and an entirely improvised performance that’ll keep you on your toes (but will no doubt look spectacular). Don’t expect any melancholic ditties, but do brace yourself for some seriously spellbinding modern dance.

The Eliot Smith Touring Company’s 2015 Spring Tour comes to the Holy Biscuit, Newcastle on Saturday 28th March.
