Cullercoats is about to get extra-quirky, with a wonderful celebration of words and music. The enormously successful IRON Age Festival of 2013 is back with a new name, boasting a line-up of fiction, prose, music and metaphor.

From Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th June, Cullercoats sea front will be buzzing with writers and musicians, in celebration of over 40 years of Cullercoats publishing company, IRON Press. One of the more unusual attractions will be Baiku – a combination of what must surely be two of the best activities going: haiku poetry and bike riding. A 20 mile scenic ride culminates in a 90 minute workshop, plus there’ll be top tips on how to develop your verse along the way.

Other offbeat activities include Writers On A Rock, which invites the public to watch writers being inspired by the natural world, and The Rescue of the Limerick, a stirring defence of the much-maligned poetry form.

Amateur writers can get inspired by some of the North’s foremost talent, with highlights including a reading from film and theatre poet, Tony Harrison and a day dedicated to Crime Writing, led by Vera author Ann Cleeves.

If you’re more the reading and listening type, there’s still plenty to do, with a programme of sea front readings in addition to late night gigs from the cream of the coast’s musicians. There’s also a book fair from Inpress Publishing Ltd. and an exhibition by Seven Stories at Cullercoats Community Centre.

Add to the mix a purpose-brewed Eclectic IRON beer and a specially-commissioned play about fracking, and you’re onto a winner.

Eclectic IRON Festival takes place on Cullercoats sea front from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th June.
