Ghost stories have been around for as long as we can remember, though a local Durham writer has been collecting new ones, all inspired by regional myths or supposedly haunted sites local to each author. Now wanting to launch all of these as an anthology, Mark Nixon has turned to crowdfunding website Kickstarter for help to raise money for the release of Shadows at the Door: An Anthology.

With the book set to feature thirteen short stories, from writers all over the world, it will also be released as an eBook, audiobook (with a specially-composed score) and illustrated hardback. The campaign to raise funds has already proved popular, with backers donating over £1000 in the campaign’s first few days, and it was selected as one of Kistarter’s Projects We Love the day after its launch. It still has some way to go to raise the £11,500 it needs, with a deadline set of Saturday 16th April. The money will cover the basic publishing costs like printing, design work and an international ISBN code. For all money donated there are numerous perks on offer including the chance to name a character in the book, personalized illustrations, and even a personal ghost tour around New York City.

The anthology features stories set in or inspired by places including Norfolk, Derbyshire, Rugby, Scottish Highlands, Toronto, Pittsburgh, New York, Rural Yorkshire, Lake Superior and Kent. The featured stories will be exclusive to the anthology, and will be illustrated by Barney Bodoano.

A long time horror fan, Mark Nixon set up his own website www.shadowsatthedoor.com as a place to share his writing with friends and peers, which lead to the site becoming a haven for lovers of the macabre. While the publishing world is changing, and readers can be reached in all manner of ways, there’s nothing quite like a book; and Mark aims for a traditional publishing run with the help of this campaign, and to have something very special in the hands of avid horror readers.
