Those with a thirst for adventure would do well to make a quest for Durham’s Gala Theatre this month, as the Durham Adventure Festival returns to the venue from Friday 26th-Sunday 28th April.

The weekend of thrills and spills has been designed to encourage a love and appreciation of the great outdoors, with guest speakers and film screenings aimed at those with a passion for exploration and discovery. This year’s guest speakers line-up features a handful of household names and telly favourites, including bonkers survivalist Ed Stafford, whose exploits include walking the length of the Amazon river and being marooned in remote locations (sometimes inexplicably without a stitch of clothing); world renowned climber Sir Chris Bonington; cave diver Jason Mallinson, who was part of the team responsible for rescuing the young Thai football team from Tham Luang cave; travel writer and filmmaker Ash Bhardwaj and ‘fastpacking’ (not a speedy suitcase stuffer, but a cross between backpacking and mountain running) expert Jenny Tough.

Film screening-wise, there’s an opportunity to see the award-winning Free Solo, a stunning portrait of free soloist climber Alex Honnold and his death-defying achievement of climbing Yosemite’s El Capitan without a rope; there’s a breathtaking exploration of Canada’s remote wilderness in The Yukon Assignment; plus short films tackling such subjects as extreme cycling, winter sports, mountain climbing, underwater exploration, trail running and inspirational tales perfect for families.
