Last year, independent arts organisation Writers’ Block North East took over the management of the Big Screen in Middlesbrough’s Centre Square. The team behind Writers’ Block, including Laura Degnan and James Harris, have been known for bringing over 400 new works from grassroots filmmakers and showcasing them in regional galleries, independent cinemas, libraries, cafes, pubs and nightclubs, but the acquisition of the Big Screen has presented them with a much juicier prospect. Now they have the perfect platform to broadcast these works to the people of Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley.

So, between Friday 13th and Saturday 14th March, the organisation are hosting a music video festival, Don’t Dream It, Screen It. As well as being on the Big Screen, the films shown at the event will also be screened at a number of local venues at the same time, including mima and Green Dragon Studios.

Bands who are looking for someone to direct a video for them have been encouraged to get in touch and four bands are already having their music videos made by local filmmakers specifically in time for the festival. Many others have already been chosen to feature in a showcase on the Saturday, which will be shown alongside the community videos. The 46-video showcase includes clips from bands, artists and organisations including Streetwise Opera, Collectors Club, Zeitgeist 77, Young Rebel Set, Bi:Lingual, Goy Boy McIlroy, The Jar Family and Saint Saviour among many others.

Culminating in an evening awards ceremony and a screening of the best of the festival on the Big Screen in Middlesbrough town centre on Saturday 14th March, Don’t Dream It, Screen It is likely to be one of the biggest film events in Middlesbrough this year.

Don’t Dream It, Screen It takes place in Middlesbrough on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th March.
