Locals and out of towners alike are invited to spend a fortnight discovering the delights on offer in Middlesbrough, as the Discover Middlesbrough festival returns.

One of the key events, kicking festivities off at Centre Square on Friday 16th is Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, an array of unusual and artistic installations placed slap bang in the middle of the town. Glowing rainbows, illuminated bottles and neon interpretations of 11th Century proverbs will be on display, with festival goers encouraged to get amongst the artworks. A ‘micro’ street food market, a series of unsettling films at the Reference Library, behind-the-scenes explorations of the Town Hall (bring a torch!) and a twilight tour of the historic 19th Century Empire Theatre are all on offer, plus those with a head for heights can explore the newly installed glass elevator on the Transporter Bridge.

A host of fringe events are planned on the opening night at TSOne, House of Blah Blah and Python Gallery, with a range of other exciting options to discover the town throughout the rest of the month too.

On an artistic angle, there’s a Studios Open Day across the town on Saturday 24th, allowing the public to view work in progress and engage with local artists, and if you’re feeling energetic why not join in the Art Run, a guided jog through the artwork of Middlesbrough which includes some intriguing stops – from a two minute silent disco to a ‘colour fight’ on the Transporter Bridge.

Other highlights include the Middlesbrough Hidden Women trail, which profiles women across the town offers an opportunity to discover pioneers in art, politics, health, peace and justice on Saturday 31st; take a tour of the Middlesbrough Football Club with knowledgeable guides on Monday 26th; delve into the Teesside art archives on Tuesday 27th; brace your wallet for an Autumn craft fair at Dorman Museum on Thursday 29th and enjoy a very special Black Light Engine Room Halloween spectacular on Saturday 31st at Westgarth Social Club.

Discover Middlesbrough takes place across the town from Friday 16th until Saturday 31st October.
