Fashion fans have been gifted with solid biopics of legendary designers in Coco Before Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent in recent years, and now new documentary Dior & I gives audiences real and unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the storied and iconic fashion house of Dior.

We follow the creation of Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons’ first haute couture collection as new Creative Director for Dior, following his fascinating creative process as he finds his voice alongside a dedicated group of collaborators who are tirelessly and intimately committed to their work. Oh, and Simons only has eight weeks to prepare his first Dior collection, as opposed to the usual six months.

With deadlines looming, day-to-day pressures big and small are infused by the constant weight of the iconic fashion house’s history. The creation of the brand itself is seen through archival footage, with parallels drawn between the current experiences of Raf Simons and those of the famously private Christian Dior. Intimate bonds develop between people and a past that is very much alive, as the new blood defines his style and brings emotion back to the catwalk to meet – and possibly even exceed – the standards of the old master.

Dior & I screens at the Tyneside Cinema from Tuesday 31st March.
