Combusting with reverb, delicate guitar and the ever-elusive image that they flaunt as if it is effortless to retain, American four-piece DIIV have returned with their tangible, hazy second release Is The Is Are, and a much awaited stint at Newcastle’s Riverside on Saturday 26th March.

Their abundance of glazed, dewy indie pop ditties have seen the band gain serious plaudits since their debut in 2011. Originally beginning as lead singer Zachary Cole Smith’s solo project Dive, the group expanded and the name became slightly ironic (seemingly all the members were Zodiac water signs). Their first release, Oshin, caused waves with its Nirvana-esque guitar and peculiar melodies that ensured they became difficult to pigeonhole, and catapulted them to the stature as one of the most exciting must-hear bands around.

Is The Is Are builds upon their dream pop persona, with stand-out track Dopamine displaying a far punchier drum pace whilst still retaining those inevitable twinkling riffs. DIIV’s live performances are soothing and intriguing, and manage not to have you gazing at your toes for 90 minutes.
