You know you’re all kinds of cool when you name yourself after a street gang in Surf Nazis Must Die. Solo synth monster Tom Hirst did just that and became Design A Wave. Last year he treated the world to a meaty slab of disco on his imprint No Label, while he’s also recently released a new 12”, International Journey of Synthetic Emotion, on Alien Jams. He’s now bringing his eclectic synth music to the Star and Shadow on Saturday, where he’s likely to air a medley of songs from his new release.

He’s joined by Newcastle-based Wilt Wagner, a pioneer in everything to do with quayboards and drunkmachines (his words). If you’re not quite sure what to expect from the experimentalist, then you might be interested to know that Wagner recorded a whole series of 15-second tunes that he calls Lunch Break Classics. Maybe he’ll break out some of his Balloon Funk when supporting Hirst (no pun intended).

Design a Wave and Wilt Wagner play the Star and Shadow, Newcastle on Saturday 28th February.
