The historical connection between Wearside and Washington DC has been well established over the years; but how do you turn that into a real cultural climax? A string of events between the two cities have already taken place but the latest is the arrival of the DC Shorts Film Festival in Sunderland. Working in tandem with the Sunderland Shorts Film Fest, North East artists are being given the opportunity to showcase their work on an international stage for one night only on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th January.

Aiming to nurture emerging filmmakers from the region, the 16 films selected to screen herald the beginning of preparations for the Sunderland fest taking place in the summer. The 90-minute screening of the shorts – both live-action and animated – spans a wide range of themes and subjects, while a number of directors will also be attending the event and taking part in a Q&A session after the showings.

The DC Shorts Film Festival takes place at the David Puttnam Media Centre, Sunderland on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th January.
