It’s been almost a decade since the release of their last album After the Ending and, finally, Florida emo export Dashboard Confessional return this year with a new record.

Crooked Shadows also offers something else very exciting: a new outlook on life, courtesy of vocalist Chris Carrabba. Sure, ten years might take the mick a bit for a self-exploration break, but it does mean hopefully he’s not going to lose himself again for quite a while. Things appear to have gotten a bit optimistic for Carrabba. Single Heart Beat Here is a delightful romantic acoustic number that made me wonder if this is what Ed Sheeran would sound like if he was emo. We Fight is a bit more what I’d expect musically from Dashboard Confessional; angsty pop rock trying a little bit too hard is a specific music genre which you either love or hate. (I love it, it’s a classic in my books.)

If the new stuff appeals, Dashboard hit Newcastle’s Riverside on Wednesday 14th November as part of their UK tour, where they’ll be blazing the fresh tracks alongside those nostalgic noughties hits. For anyone who wore baggy jeans (none of those modern skinny things) and bad eyeliner in high school, now is the time to relive those glorious emo days.
