With Edinburgh Fringe Festival on the horizon, July is usually the month comedians nervously test their Fringe shows in slightly less pressure-filled surrounds. Bonus news for us then, as being so close to the border the North East gets the cream of the comic crop on their way up the A1.

Darlington’s Hilarity Bites – themselves always on the ball throughout the year with performances from some of the brightest and funniest in the biz – dedicate a whole month of Fringe preview shows in a whopper of a comedy festival, which will see big household names perform alongside exciting up and comers.

There’s a gig practically every day in July, with some of our favourites including guitar-wielding loop artist Rob Deering, who offers up his interactive quiz show Beat This (Monday 1st); political comic Matt Forde will provide acute observations, plus there’s support from surreal sketch performers, The Delightful Sausage (Monday 8th); the hilarious Gein’s Family Giftshop sketch troupe team up with All Killa, No Filla podcast co-host Rachel Fairburn (Tuesday 9th) and observational comic Alun Cochrane road tests his new show, Brave New Alun (Wednesday 10th) all at Old English Gentleman.

At Hole In The Wall the Hilarity Bites New Act Competition Final will provide ample opportunity to discover your new favourite comedian (Monday 15th). Back at Old English Gentleman, local funnyman Seymour Mace performs alongside Aussie comic Tom Little (Tuesday 16th); 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown dictionary corner favourite Tom Binns brings his Psychic Comedium show to Darlo (Wednesday 24th) and rock star turned blogger and stand-up comedy star Sam Avery presents his hilariously relatable Learner Parent show on Wednesday 31st.
