The tale of Cyrano de Bergerac has undergone a couple of extremely famous and critically acclaimed adaptations over the years. Perhaps most notably, both Gerard Depardieu, Derek Jacobi and Steve Martin have taken on the roles in vastly different filmic interpretations of the narrative, bringing the panache of one of literature’s most famous love triangles to the silver screen.

Now, Northern Stage, alongside Royal & Derngate, are bringing Cyrano back to the stage. First among men but totally lost among women, Cyrano is both a poet and a soldier, a brawler and, unfortunately, a hopeless romantic. He’s amazing at everything he turns his hand to, but he’s got one major curse: he has the biggest nose in all of France. Hopelessly in love with Roxane, who is his equal in wit but impossibly beautiful, he can’t confess his love and so decides to be her confidante. Handsome cadet Christian arrives on the scene and catches the eye of Roxane, even though he’s not the sharpest sword in the cavalry. Despite his breaking heart, Cyrano decides to help the pair by writing epic love letters to the pair of them, igniting their romance.

Duels are fought, honours are defended and a lot of cake gets eaten as one of the most famous and tear-jerking love triangles comes to the stage for a fortnight of performances.

Cyrano de Bergerac comes to the Northern Stage, Newcastle from Wednesday 29th April until Saturday 16th May.
