Reliably informed

Chilli Studios have a simple yet admirable aim: to engage people in creative activity, which promotes social inclusion, develops skill and builds resilience. Resilience is definitely needed sometimes in the art world, thanks to some seriously harsh criticism and accusations of laziness being lobbed continually at contemporary art. They’re probably talking about a different kind of resilience though, one that can see you through tough times with grit and determination. It’s perhaps no surprise then, looking at their mission statement, that the group’s annual exhibition focuses on the theme of ‘curiosity and grit.’

In Chilli Studios’ own words, curiosity is “the desire to know what is beyond your experience” while grit is “the ability to open your eyes, plant your feet on the ground and look the world straight in eye.” With these two facets in mind, a whole range of works have been produced by the members of the studio, which will reflect on what these words mean to them specifically. It’s set to be a very varied exhibition filled with the kind of warmth only Chilli Studios could offer.

Curiosity and Grit comes to the Holy Biscuit, Newcastle from Wednesday 7th until Thursday 15th October.
