After the huge success of putting a new twist on Romeo & Juliet – transporting the star-crossed lovers to the North East as a Geordie and a Mackem – Cranked Anvil have sought to put their own unique spin on Shakespeare again with the re-imagining of Hamlet.

Notoriously one of The Bard’s most challenging plays, the setting this time is a trendy café-bar – Elsinore’s – on Newcastle’s bustling Quayside; a thin cover for a seedy world of organised crime and small-time Geordie mafia. Hamlet seeks revenge for his father’s untimely death in a world rife with conspiracy, treachery and double dealing. The production features live music composed especially for the piece by David Jackson (who appeared as Romeo last month) and performed by him and local singer-songwriter Natasha Haws, as Ophelia. The extra dimension is just one of many ways Cranked Anvil makes sure you’ll view this classic piece of theatre like you’ve never seen it before.

Cranked Anvil’s version of Hamlet is at Alphabetti Theatre, Newcastle from Tuesday 7th until Saturday 11th June and Alun Armstrong Theatre, Stanley on Thursday 16th June.
