Just over a year since the Tyne Theatre & Opera House was taken over by a new parent company set up to protect and grow this beautiful venue, the good folk at the theatre are striving to bring a far greater range of acts and performances to the Grade I listed building.

In particular, they’ve been working hard to bring more comedy and stand-up to a room beloved by comedians including Stewart Lee and Jerry Sadowitz. The coming months see a host of major names (and, uh, Lee Nelson) appear at the Tyne Theatre & Opera House as part of the venue’s new lease of life.

One obvious highlight is Dylan Moran’s appearance on Friday 11th March with his new show Off the Hook, while on Thursday 31st March the real brains behind Phoenix Nights, Dave Spikey, takes his show Punchlines to the theatre. In the coming months there’s also major shows from local comedy heroes Gavin Webster (Friday 13th May) and Sarah Millican (Wednesday 25th-Saturday 28th May and various dates in July), as well as performances from big new names like Katherine Ryan, who appears on Thursday 14th April. Alongside more ambitious music and theatrical bookings (including the recently announced appearance by American folk act Sun Kil Moon in June), it seems that comedy is set to be a major part of the theatre’s future.
