If you live in Sunderland and you’ve never listened to Spark FM then you’re missing out. The community radio station plays everything from chart pop to rock, indie, urban and some weird and wonderful obscurities in its twilight hours. More than anything though, it’s all run by a team of people who are truly passionate about music. And they don’t come much more passionate than Alex Burgess, Alex Whelan and Hannah Foster, the presenters and producers of the Local Music Show. Showcasing the best of local music every Sunday, the trio have done their utmost to highlight and promote bands from around the region in their slot. Now they’re taking the next logical step and putting on a gig crammed with some of the best musical talent from the north east.

Headlining the event at Sunderland’s Independent is Mackem five-piece Cohesion. Their sound, which has been compared to the likes of Two Door Cinema Club and Death Cab For Cutie, sees them mixing rock with elements of various other genres to tear down the walls of cliched indie music and create something totally fresh. Their latest single Luna, released back in January, was a fine demonstration of their fun-loving attitude towards their craft, something that always gets the crowd moving at their gigs.

Kobadelta are offering something a little more frantic and feral with their psych-rock. Tearing into raw chords and epically atmospheric melodies, the Newcastle five-piece are no strangers to filling rooms with their wall of sound and brilliantly crafted tracks. On their Remain Distracted EP, which came out last year, the quintet delivered on all their previous promise by bringing us a meaty slab of pure sonic goodness to infiltrate your ears.

Continuing the post-rock theme are Shades, whose blend of experimental math-rock and post-hardcore has turned many heads over recent months. They’re currently gearing up to release their new EP, Lose Your Chains, on Saturday 21st March, so the gig will be the first time we could be properly exposed to whatever wonders they have in store. If their last EP is anything to go by, though, we’re in for a bumper crop of shifting melodic riffs and shifting time signatures alongside some truly brain-melting technical wizardry. If you’ve never had the pleasure of seeing Shades live, then prepare to be punched in the gut in the best possible way.

Kicking off the night is the lovely Charlie Dancer, who is currently gearing up to release a new EP. The multi-talented Dancer is taking a break from promoting other local acts as part of Beyond the Wall to bring his beguiling blend of folk, pop and rock to Sunderland. After recently playing a highly successful gig at the Tyne Bar to preview his new tunes, the Newcastle troubadour’s star continues to rise and he’s sure to win over more people with his perfectly constructed, deceptively intricate songs on the night.

The event is absolutely free, meaning there’s no excuse not to pop down and support some of the best acts on the local music scene.

Cohesion, Kobadelta, Shades and Charlie Dancer all play at Independent, Sunderland on Friday 13th March.
