Blessed with one of the most sublimely, perfectly unwelcome band names out there, Belgian quartet Cocaine Piss are developing a reputation as one of the most exciting names in punk today. Having won over even DIY music’s own Grouch, Steve Albini, their forthcoming second album looks set to push the band to new heights of acclaim. Before that however, there’s the small matter of a new UK tour, which brings them to The Cluny 2 in Newcastle on Thursday 18th October.

Having been fortunate enough to attend their debut Newcastle show two years ago, this writer can readily attest to the frentic, adrenalized fun that is the Cocaine Piss live show – their sharp, frazzled, funny songs and the astonishing energy of Aurélie Poppins is infectious and joyous to behold, and their return is a very welcome one indeed.

Joining them on the night are two of the region’s own premier punk flagbearers. Blóm’s hammer-blow heavy experimental hardcore is jarring and brilliant in equal measure, with the deft musicianship of Liz and Erika taking them into exciting, surprising territory. Opening the show are GGAllan Partridge, whose colourful and absurdist sound has already won them plenty of fans of both surreal post-punk and outrageous pop culture references.
