Reliably informed

As another election machine powers up, ready to dominate the airwaves for the next few months as the main parties scrabble for the lowest denominator, the good folk of The People’s Bookshop in Durham offer some alternative voices to offset the white noise from the media with their Club Resistance nights. Taking place on the second Sunday of each month, the clubs will run from now until the election, and are free (although a hat or glass or similar receptacle will do the rounds for donations).

This Sunday sees club #2 host Joe Solo, a well-regarded and remarkably prolific Scarborough folk singer who uses his music to look at the history of resistance to the political establishment, from the Tolpuddle Martyrs to the Miner’s Strike, the Spanish Civil War to the recent anti-capitalism movement.  Solo’s latest album, Left Turn On Liberty Lane, will doubtless feature. Also performing on the night is performance poet Asa J Maddison. The organisers strongly recommend emailing them on clubresistance@outlook.com to reserve a place since it’s expected to get very busy.

Club Resistance 2 takes place at The People’s Bookshop, Durham on Sunday 18th January.
