Reliably informed

Delicate swirls of guitar ambience reverberate over stifled, whispered vocals, before leaping skittishly into a calamitous noise of angular guitar rhythms and pounding bass riffs… Newcastle foursome Cauls are a gripping listen who always seem keen to experiment with a unique palette of sounds and textures, without ever feeling like they’re overdoing it.

Calling themselves post-hardcore feels like a bit of a disservice. Trying to label a band with such lofty ambitions as Cauls becomes more problematic, but thankfully, pretty much irrelevant. There’s a lot going on in their finely crafted tunes, and their short releases so far are brimming with intriguing ideas. Fans of bands like Oceansize and The Mars Volta should be more than happy to have a group like this on the scene.

It might be an especially good time to catch the band, as they are booked to record a full length release this month. With two EPs, ArcTangent and 2000trees festivals under their belts, Cauls are a talented local group that could be on to something seriously special this year. Joining them are the equally exuberant comrades Future Horizons and solo guitarist James Leonard Hewitson.

Cauls play The Head of Steam, Newcastle on Friday 13th February.
