Despite the relatively short time it has existed, Little Buildings’ reputation continues to flourish; regularly putting on gigs featuring some of the most stellar line-ups around. As it starts to fill an important role as a mainstay of the local music scene, it pays that forward, and plays host to Hit The Bricks; the inaugural gig of local promoter The Intelligentleman. Sunday 21st February sees two of the North East’s most respected acts join two of its freshest, as well as a DIY bass ace from Scotland.

Opening the show is Mark James Hammond, one of the fledgling acts on show, there’s an intense undercurrent to his music, a subtle angst that is sure to captivate all in attendance. Hitting the stage next will be Your Casket Or Mine?, hook-laden, ska tinged acoustic numbers with a dark edge provide a shift in tone for the eclectic bill.

Then it’s on to the North East legends, Nev Clay is the first of those. One of the stalwarts of our region’s music scene, he’s inspired many, and the talented singer and guitarist will showcase a massive gift for writing intelligent, perceptive lyrics too. With bass lines showcasing influences from folk to punk, Howie Reeve is another musician with a lot to take in. His idiosyncratic bass is complemented by his bizarre but highly arresting repartee. Bringing the night to a spectacular close will be Cath and Phil Tyler. With Phil’s raw, twirling banjo and guitar playing providing an assured sound for Cath’s primitive folksy hollers to whisper their way over; they’re musical raconteurs who’ll retell stories of love, sex and death. Having taken their raw Anglo-American folk influenced sound to such esteemed environs as the Royal Opera House in London, this return to a more intimate setting will make for a rare and must-see show.

Cath and Phil Tyler, Howie Reeve, Nev Clay, Your Casket or Mine? and Mark James Hammond play Little Buildings, Newcastle on Sunday 21st February.
