If you take a look at any work by the artist Carne Griffiths, one word might instantly spring to mind: intricate. Griffiths’ style, working with a mix of calligraphy ink, graphite and liquids (including tea), has natural links with his long-standing work in embroidery. After serving an apprenticeship at the longest-established gold wire embroidery firm in the world, he eventually became creative director. As well as producing elaborate designs for the military, advertising, theatre and fashion, his work has also featured in films such as Valkyrie and The Last King of Scotland.

The attention to detail he displayed within his embroidery translates into his art, a vibrant juxtaposition of human forms and geometric shapes, angular lines and organic flora. A solo exhibition of his work will be on display at Durham’s Outstanding Art gallery until Monday 6th January, offering a chance to dive into his artistic world. While the works are based on images from real life, Griffiths transports these touchstones into a vividly presented escapist realm where the lines between reality and abstraction are blurred. Often awe-inspiring in their complexity, Griffiths’ exhibition might make you rethink how you perceive the seemingly simple art drawing.
