Part of the Tyneside Cinema’s Japanese season, this 1966 classic is the story of young Tsuyu moving away from home to work in one of Osaka’s many hostess bars (kind of like Hooters, but classier). She meets Yoko, who owns a model school and considers training up. From here things take several shocking twists and Tsuyu is drawn into the seedy world of porn films. Full of ups and downs, in more than one sense, this “flesh” movie further debunks the Western view of Japan being prim and proper, and strengthens the view that debauchery and sex are not taboo in one of the world’s most bipolar countries.

IMDb will have you believe this is a comedy, but some of the sexual violence portrayed and harsh lessons learnt are far from funny, then again, our current perception wouldn’t be the only difference between English 2010s and 1960s Japan. Shot in grainy B&W, and with English subtitles, I am sure this won’t be one to miss, not least because of the ridiculously funky soundtrack! You will never get another chance to see this film, so push the hentai boat out and take a chance. Gambatte!

Carmen From Kawachi screens at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle on Wednesday 11th March.
