One of last year’s most unexpected but beguiling musical treats was the debut album from the Melbourne born, Berlin based artist Carla dal Forno. Although only spanning eight tracks and weighing in at under half an hour, You Know What It’s Like casts a beguiling spell over the listener. The combination of dal Forno’s rough-hewn but deliberate production, with layers of obscured R&B rhythms and static melodies, and her intimate and minimalistic songwriting that recalls the laconic heartache of Young Marble Giants makes for an atmospheric and absorbing listen, with severe soundscapes bleeding into miraculous, fragile pop songs and back again. On highlights like the astonishing What You Gonna Do Now?, dal Forno blurs the boundary between the two so thoroughly as to render such distinctions meaningless.
It’s a delight then to report that as part of her debut UK tour, Carla dal Forno will be performing at Newcastle University’s Culture Lab on Friday 12th February. As a hub for the experimental and forward-thinking, it’s an ideal venue for her brilliantly realised and quietly provocative work. With her album garnering increasing word-of-mouth hype and critical praise, this date looks certain to be a must attend for the discerning listener.
