When seven poets who had all won Northern Promise Awards from New Writing North were brought together under the tutorship of poet Clare Pollard, they knew they wanted to create a platform for other writers based in the North. Their aim was to create a beautifully designed magazine which would showcase the amazing poets they’d come across, and so Butcher’s Dog was born. Each issue of the biannual poetry magazine is created with love, care and attention; featuring work from a variety of poets and guest editors, submissions to the magazine are open to writers all over the UK, but they are particularly keen to hear from northerners.

For the next issue of Butcher’s Dog, which is released on 9th May, the team are thrilled that poet and novelist, Carolyn Jess-Cooke will be joining Amy Mackelden and Andrew Sclater as guest editor. “Together they’ve chosen poems of humour and tragedy, affection and disaffection, some tightly knitted and some threadbare but all of them say something distinctive,” says managing editor Degna Stone. “You’ll want to read these poems again and again.”

The magazine also features work by a cracking mix of poets, from the distinctive style and voice of Jane Burn – who the team are particularly excited to be showcasing again – to younger poets like Lydia Hounat. The team are celebrating the issue with a launch party, which takes place at Live Theatre on Saturday 9th May where readers including Charlotte Ansell, Catherine Ayres, Jane Burn, Stephanie Green and Rob Walton will showcase their work.

“I’d love to see people going to a poetry night in the same way that people go out to a gig,” says Degna. “We want to continue publishing amazing poetry and uncovering new talent, but we’re also on the lookout for collaborators outside the world of poetry, if anyone has a project they’d like to discuss we’d be happy to listen!”
