Poetry is beautiful, it is life, it is a translation of the soul into the words of mere mortals, it is pure expression in rhythmic form that can capture an epoch perfectly and package it in a way that can bring a tear to the eye or a smile to the face. Capitalism on the other hand is awful. It’s oppressive, cruel and is quite often (although not always) the obstacle to art and culture and in this instance, needs to be overcome to allow a local publication to bring beautiful words to the world.

Butcher’s Dog is a bi-annual independent poetry magazine founded and published in North East England that prints poems by diverse writers with distinctive voices from across the UK and Republic of Ireland. They are the good guys in that they want every writer to have a chance of being published regardless of background and have never charged submission fees or make it a prerequisite that they purchase a copy of the magazine. The magazine is of high quality, edited with love and, to make it affordable in these days of austerity, sold it at cost price.

Due to increased publication costs, a slow year in sales and a lack of funding, Butcher’s Dog are currently unable to take their Autumn issue to press and so are reaching out to the art-loving public to ask for donations. Head to their crowdfunding page and give what you can to keep poetry thriving in the North-East. Also, buying a copy of this magazine will help keep it in print in the future so head to their website and subscribe.
