As events go, combining music and spoken word together is always a winner, especially if the bill includes some of the best laid-back talent you can get. Broadside, designed as a platform for performers and storytellers to simply share their craft with others and inspired by the Broadside ballads distributed between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries, is bringing together a small but perfectly formed artists to play within the cosy rooms of Bar Loco in Newcastle.

Bringing the spoken word to the event this month are Charlie Dearnley and Cathy Garner, who are supported by three local musical acts. Both Ditte Elly and Caoilfhionn Rose are purveyors of fragile and tender folk songs, while both harbour the quirk and playfulness of Joanna Newsom. Meanwhile, duo Offred will bring a meatier sound to the night with their bleak lo-fi rock. It’s set to be a truly entertaining and eclectic night.

Broadside takes place at Bar Loco, Newcastle on Thursday 23rd April.
