Middlesbrough Council’s Creative Factory programme has supported everything from Pineapple Black Gallery, Orange Pip Market and Heelapalooza recently plus a raft of production and writing bursaries, commissions and mentoring opportunities for aspiring creatives.

The latest initiative in an empty shop unit in the town’s Hillstreet Shopping Centre features contributions by a handful of the town’s better known artists but the project’s real aspiration is to promote the public’s creative talents and community spirit. Organiser Gordon Dalton said, “There is so much going on in the Boro, from large events such as Big Weekend, to individuals running pottery classes in their front room. We wanted to offer up a free space where people go to shop, eat, socialise, where they could see what is going on but also have the opportunity to share what they like to do.”

The Brilliantly Boro hub opened this weekend and aims to be safe fun, friendly and welcoming. The space will have a pram park, picnic tables and deckchairs with the aim to provoke people’s curiosity. From art, music, poetry, but also video games, knitting, gardening and reading to family history projects, singing, stamp collecting or trainspotting.

In addition, the latest edition of Pop Up in the City returns on Saturday 3rd August with the Brilliantly Boro space providing an eating area and entertainment. Pop Up in the City is a food market which gives local food and beverage businesses the opportunity to showcase their offers to a new and wider audience, whilst giving Saturday shoppers the opportunity to sample some tasty treats.

Creative Factory is Middlesbrough Council’s Great Place Tees Valley project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England.
