In 1985, social critic Neil Postman compared the works of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley: “what Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book.” Huxley’s stance on capitalism, the class system and Fordism made his classic Brave New World one of the most challenged books in history and its themes are still resonating with people today.

The new adaptation of the book by Dawn King, coming to Darlington Civic Theatre from Tuesday 10th until Saturday 14th November, has been directed by James Dacre and stars Wuthering Heights’ Sophie Ward. It aims to bring to life the horrors of Huxley’s genetically-engineered world order, where people are safe, healthy and not afraid of death. Sounds ideal, right? Well, not exactly. Helping to bring this dystopian future to life are acclaimed neoclassical ensemble These New Puritans, whose soundtrack for the show is a striking blend of classical strings, moody soundscapes and hip-hop inspired beats. Thanks to the wealth of creative talent on board, it’s promising to be one of the most heart-stopping and arresting productions of the novel to date.
