North East spoken word promoters Born Lippy are justifiably proud of their long-running performance events. Striving to bring the highest quality poetry, comedy, rap, storytelling, slam and spoken word music fusion to the region, their events are a riot of wordy goodness which thrive from an engaged and involved audience.

Live events may not be possible right now, but that’s not going to stop Born Lippy and their legions of fans from getting together, albeit virtually. The group host their very first free online event on Tuesday 23rd June via Zoom, and they’ve got a world-class line-up.

Heading up proceedings is performance artist, poet, actor and producer Kat Francois. The polymath has received numerous plaudits for her evocative poetry, she’s written and starred in two critically acclaimed plays, Seven Times Me and Raising Lazarus, which recalls the experiences of West Indian soldiers during the First World War and is based on accounts of her own relative. Kat was the first person to win a televised poetry slam and is a frequent contributor to Radio 4’s arts programme Front Row. A passionate advocate of youth theatre and young black female voices in the UK, she’s currently gearing up to tour her young female poetry group Women Must.

Also appearing is Newcastle’s Kema Kay, who will be performing tracks from his forthcoming EP. The rapper, singer and songwriter is a phenomenal talent, able to transport his listeners as he expertly weaves inspirational tales through poetry and song.

Up and coming act Elaine Robertson also joins the event, showcasing her witty, observational and surreal stories, plus there’s a mini slam for audiences to get involved in and much more to be announced.

Born Lippy’s ability to promote diverse voices and share tales of hope rather than isolation is something we sorely need right now, and this free show provides an ideal opportunity for audiences to stay connected.

Born Lippy takes place on Tuesday 23rd June at 7.30pm via Zoom. Click here for further info and Zoom link
