It’s always a rare treat when the formation of a band is also the coming together of different nationalities and backgrounds; rich heritages drawn on in a musical melting pot that blends into something wonderful. The union present in Boreas is just this, and can be heard when they come to The Cumberland Arms on Friday 5th February.

The all female four-piece started as a collaboration between Scottish singer Lori Watson and Norwegian fiddle player Britt Pernille Frøholm, who were then joined by accordionist Irene Tillung from Norway and harpist and Gaelic singer Rachel Newton from Edinburgh. Utilising the strong ties to their respective nation’s folk scenes, their traditional influences lead in to something much more experimental. Boreas have used all at their disposal to carve out a bold sound that is fresh and enchanting. Celtic and Nordic undertones burst through wonderful musicianship.

With their eagerly awaited debut album Ahoy Hoy just released, this album launch is the perfect chance to grab first glimpses of songs shaped by the expansive distance of the North Sea; this a band whose intricate, delicate musicianship could be set to reach lots of new ears in a big 2016.
