Reliably informed

Cobalt Studios is becoming an increasingly vital part of the Ouseburn cultural scene, putting on some wildly diverse events (musical and otherwise), and on Saturday 16th December they’re playing host to a real beast of a night.

Promoted by Bish of Opal Tapes, the bill is topped by the truly mighty Bong, the Tyneside stoner doom titans with an astonishing ability to play one chord for an hour and make it utterly fucking thrilling. They don’t play hometown gigs too often so that alone makes this gig pretty special. But there’s also Vanishing, another spin-off from the multi-headed Gnod-hydra based out of Islington Mill. Vanishing veer between dark poetry, industrial dub, bleak techno and chilling electronics and are intriguing.

Cold Spring’s Colossloth deal in occult soundscapes, hexed beats and eldritch atmospheres and at times can be frankly terrifying. And then there’s Luna Del Cazador, one of my favourite discoveries of the year, who find a sweet spot between metal, post-punk and dark folk and really make it their own. All this plus Richard Dawson playing tunes between the bands and Bish himself promising a closing DJ set “designed for the metal freax”. There’s a 2am finish and Cobalt is an ideal venue for this kind of deviance so get your Christmas started right.
