The Japan Foundation’s film season It Only Happens In The Movies? Japanese Cinema And Encounters continues in March with Bolt from the Blue (Seiten no hekireki). The film is novelist and comedian Gekidan Hitori’s directorial debut and is based on his own novel, which was a bestseller in Japan.

Haruo (Yo Oizumi) has only one dream: to be a magician. However, it doesn’t seem to be that easy, as he’s constantly in and out of jobs and is tending to bars to make a living. On top of that, he gets the news that his estranged father has suddenly passed away. On his way to get his inheritance, Haruo is struck by a lightning bolt and taken back in time, to a past in which he’s not yet born and his mother and father are still young.

A story about family, inheritance, dedication and the choices that we make, Bolt from the Blue is promising to be as big of a hit as the novel it’s based on. A must-see for all Back to the Future fans out there.

Bolt From The Blue screens at the Tyneside Cinema on Sunday 8th March.
