A completely free festival celebrating the best the north east roots and blues scene has to offer hosted in one of Sunderland’s best pubs-come-venues? If that sentence doesn’t sell you on the day-long event at the Dun Cow, then perhaps the line up will. The Dun Cow have sourced a variety of well-known names and rising talent to suit everyone’s taste. Stand out acts on the bill include Paul Liddell, who has enjoyed numerous massive supporting slots alongside the likes of Florence and the Machine and even Calvin Harris thanks to his R’n’B inflected rootsy sound. Rebecca Young, better known as This Little Bird, will also be performing her beautiful acoustic numbers to the crowd, as will Mackem duo YUMA, whose take on the blues is wonderfully infectious.

Make sure you also keep a keen ear out for a Forgotten City Records double-header in the form of blues heavyweight Dean James and newcomers Chased By Badguys, as well as a set from their ever-reliable George Shovlin. Ned and the Hot Pies, George Lamb and Snake Oil are also among the acts playing, but the line up is too extensive and varied to do it justice here. It’s best just to spend a day listening to what the north east has to offer in one of Sunderland’s finest west end establishments – you might just find your new favourite roots act.

The Dun Cow Blues and Acoustic Festival takes place at the Dun Cow, Sunderland on Saturday 5th September.
