Pop Recs might have become a major player in Sunderland’s music scene, providing a regular stream of events from local and national touring bands, but that’s not to overshadow the work done by music venue Independent. Hosting all manner of gigs and club nights, the venue celebrates its tenth birthday this year with an array of special performances and events.

Kicking off with an impressive booking, they’re bringing the forceful electronic sounds of Blanck Mass to Sunderland on Saturday 9th April. The solo project of Benjamin John Power, one half of noise-dance duo Fuck Buttons, Blanck Mass expands on the foreboding drones and loops of his main band whilst still keeping an eye on the dancefloor.

Having released his second album Dumb Flesh last year on the iconic American psychedelic record label Sacred Bones, he’s moved his sound into more accessible and immediate territory whilst still retaining the intensity and threat of his previous work.

For anyone who has ever experienced the deafening majesty of a Fuck Buttons live show, the prospect of seeing Blanck Mass in action is a mouth-watering one: for those new to them, expect a visceral and exciting evening unlike anything else you might expect to hear on a usual Saturday night in Sunderland.

Blanck Mass plays Independent, Sunderland on Saturday 9th April.
