Reliably informed

In a city which is home to some exceptional live music venues, and an ever-increasing roster of independent art spaces, Cobalt Studios has masterfully combined the two. It’s a community venture, born out of love for the city’s DIY music scene and a desire to showcase the sort of experimental sounds not often heard elsewhere. The majority of their bookings are their own, although they occasionally collaborate with some of the city’s clubbing institutions to book artists which are often out of the reach of this particular corner of the city. Ape-x have been at the forefront of the city’s electronic scene for a decade, introducing Newcastle to the next generation of house and techno talent.

Bjarki certainly fits the bill, an Icelandic DJ and producer who shot to prominence in 2015 with the release of I Wanna Go Bang, a monstrous slice of industrial techno which lit up dancefloors across Europe. His live shows are as relentless as you’d expect, having been honed in the DJ booths of the Peacock Society, Sonar, Dour and Exit Festival to name but a few. His Newcastle performance coincides with the release of his fifth album Psychotic_Window on K7! Records, which draws on music he made during periods of crippling insomnia around the time his career took off. The album arrives hot on the heels of Happy Earthday, which weaved between ambient instrumental, hardcore jungle and everything in between. His North East debut at Cobalt on Saturday 7th December will bring the best of his records to life, with the darkest corner of the Ouseburn being the ideal place to take a trip with one of the most exciting acts on the circuit.
