Divine Trash are the punk rock deviants who’ve previously promoted evenings around John Waters (scratch’n’sniff Polyester), Grey Gardens, and surf music (Endless Summer), all with their trademark stamp of leopard print, eyeliner and beat-up leather jackets.

This month they’re celebrating Russ Meyer’s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls with a drag ball themed around a film that featured one of the first ‘all-girl’ rock bands on film (The Carrie Nations), plus all things psychedelic, polyester and ‘wigged out’. Starring a cast of ex-Playboy models and b-movie actors, Meyer’s film revolves around the intersection of Hollywood and Laurel Canyon in the late-60s, and was panned by critics and hated by the studio who made it; 20th Century Fox.

The night will include a screening of the movie, set design by the gurls from the Candy Vortex, cabaret from Bettina Spankenhaus and Bunny Wood, lots of go-go dancing, prizes for the best overacted drug overdose, and freakbeat from DJs Lady Annabella Marczewska of Jesmond and Sheena Revolta.

It’s their happening baby and it’ll freak you out!

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls screens at Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle on Saturday 31st January.
