Teen movies had their real heyday between the 90’s and early 00’s with hundreds of coming of age classics hitting the big screen and many going on to become cult classics, revolutionising the way we  look and think about adolescence. Two such films were Clueless and Mean Girls, which were released in 1995 and 2005 respectively, and it’s that decade between them that Beyond Clueless, which comes to the Tyneside Cinema from Tuesday 20th January, focuses on.

The documentary provides an examination of the US teen as portrayed in over 200 teen flicks; delving right into their mind, body and soul. Exploring themes such as alienation, loss and a plethora of emotional tumults including sex, drugs and violence, it’s set to give us a no holds barred look at Hollywood’s perilous teen years. With footage from the likes of Final Destination, Cherry Falls, 10 Things I Hate About You and Cruel Intentions, it will prove a real trip down memory lane for those of us in our late twenties.

Made entirely out of film footage, it was a real labour of love for director Charlie Lyne. Described as part archival account, part textual scrutiny, part audiovisual mood piece and part gushing love letter, it’s sure to be both revelatory and peppy.

Soundtracked by the whimsical yet menacing Summer Camp and narrated by renowned teen star Fairuza Balk (The Craft), it made the official selection at the SXSW Film Festival and was funded by more than 500 Kickstarter backers.

The Tyneside’s showing on Tuesday the 20th of January will also include a Q+A with the film’s director Charlie Lyne.
