The members of Bellowhead sure are busy at the minute. Fiddle player Sam Sweeney was recently in the region telling the tale of his most unusual violin and now Benji Kirkpatrick is in Stockton playing… Jimi Hendrix? It may be a little hard to believe on the surface but it’s true: the man from the big folk band and Radio 2 favourites is marking the 45th anniversary of Hendrix’s death by going on tour and playing the classic songs.

Of course, Kirkpatrick isn’t about to don a Fender and wrap a thin scarf around his head anytime soon – instead he’s taking on psychedelic classics like Foxy Lady and All Along The Watchtower in a more familiar fashion. He’s adapting them for bouzouki, banjo and mandolin, as you do. It all seems a little surreal but in fact Kirkpatrick is a lifelong fan of Hendrix – something that’s might not be too hard to believe for anyone who’s seen a full on Bellowhead show – and the show is intended to be a loving tribute to one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived. For hardcore Bellowhead fans, Kirkpatrick will also be playing some of his own material, so there’s still a chance to indulge in a little storming folk before Bendrix takes to the stage. We doubt he’ll be lighting his bouzouki on fire though… Or will he?

Benji Kirkpatrick performs at Arc, Stockton on Saturday 26th September.
