Having spent much of 2014 touring the world, performing Concerto For Piano And Orchestra with some of the planet’s greatest symphony orchestras, Ben Folds is now back on tour – this time with six-piece New York City-based chamber ensemble, yMusic.

The multi-platinum singer songwriter and producer will showcase new album So There – also written and recorded with yMusic – on ten UK dates including an evening at Sage Gateshead on Saturday 18th June.

The LP collaboration contains grandiose orchestral arrangements which masquerade as pop songs and vice versa. This includes recent single Capable Of Anything – a title which rings true for Folds himself and his ability over the years to turn his hand to sincere tearjerkers (The Luckiest) jaunty fun (Phone In A Pool) clever or cutting lyrics and everything in between (lest we forget the LP which comprised cover versions of everything from the Divine Comedy’s Songs of Love to Get Your Hands Off My Woman by The Darkness).

So There is less oddball and more classical than his previous albums, but no less compelling, and it will be interesting to see how the songs translate in the live arena.

Ben Folds and yMusic play Sage Gateshead on Saturday 18th June.
