“It’s a man’s world,” sang legendary founding father of funk James Brown. A double-bill of one-man plays, Beats North, being performed at various locations in the region, will utilise a live soundtrack (scratched by award-winning DJ Mariam Rezaei) to examine how close to reality such lyrics really are.

The two pieces focus on two North East men as protagonists, exploring how music sculpts each of their lives. Al (Ishy Din) is a Motown fanatic, despite his family pushing him to become a Bollywood convert. Meanwhile Jack (Luke Barnes) gets lost in the power of Bonnie Tyler (and who can blame him?), much to his alpha male dad’s frustration.

The plays are produced by two leading North East theatre companies; TSU, based in Middlesbrough, works specifically with young people to empower them through theatre, while Newcastle’s Curious Monkey brings to life stories that deserve to be told.

Audiences are invited to request a song for their own personal soundtrack and, after the show, come and join in the party with a playlist of guilty pleasures. And it’s not just for blokes; the themes of both plays are universal (the world would be nothing, after all, without a woman or a girl).

Beats North is at Newcastle’s Northern Stage from Tuesday 29th September until Thursday 1st October, Jabberwocky Market in Darlington on Saturday 3rd October and Customs House, South Shields on Sunday 4th October.
