With their main show on hiatus during lockdown, last week saw the return of BBC Music Introducing in the North East’s regular Thursday show on BBC Newcastle, during which intrepid presenter Nick Roberts, ably assisted by Lee Hawthorn, investigates the North East’s music scene. We had a quick chat with Nick to find out what listeners can expect from the show…

What format did the Introducing show take during the lockdown?

The Local Radio schedules were stripped back to the bare minimum at the start of the pandemic. To keep all staff safe and the station on air for as long as possible. I was able in the weekend general music shows that I’d been given to play a selection of BBC Music Introducing tracks. We then put together a weekly compilation online that was sort of like an Introducing show. We’d put these on our socials and we got a lot of shares and feedback. It was a great way of keeping Intro NE going at the time.

You came back with your first full Introducing show last Thursday, what can listeners expect?

We’re now back Thursday nights 8pm-10pm and repeated in the same slot on a Saturday. It’s pretty much business as usual playing the best music from new and emerging artists here in the North East. We’ve got a huge backlog of tracks that we’re working through. The first show back was playing out as many new tracks as we could plus a few recent favourites!

Have you noticed any changes to the music submitted or the way you interact with artists over the last couple of months?

The Introducing website is open as ever for artists to send us stuff. Just go to www.bbc.co.uk/introducing. There are a few interesting side projects that have come through and some new names that maybe wouldn’t have thought of uploading before. With social distancing we can’t really have people in the studios at the moment so sessions and interviews have to be done remotely. If artists are able to record a session at home for us we can play them out. Likewise interviews can be done over the internet or on the phone.

Can you give our readers a couple of your top tips of local musicians you’re particularly enjoying right now?

I love Swine Tax’s latest tune Screensaver. Martha Hill’s new track out this week is particularly awesome. John Dole’s Collective Thought is top and Elliot Adamson is producing some bangers at the moment.

Listen to BBC Music Introducing in the North East on 95.4FM or online at BBC Newcastle, the show is broadcast on Thursdays and Saturdays 8pm-10pm, or listen any time via the iPlayer
