Reliably informed

Two weeks ago, Barry Hyde performed in Sunderland’s Keel Square with a choir and pretty much chills up everyone’s collective spines. The former Futureheads frontman has come a long way since the Kate Bush covers and cheeky indie pop numbers and is currently in the run up to the release of his solo album Malody (a blend of ‘melody’ and ‘malady’ – see what he did there?)

At Tynemouth’s Surf Cafe, Hyde will be back behind the keyboard solo. As anyone who’s seen his one-man show knows, though, it’s set to be an emotional rollercoaster that swings from operatic highs to melancholic lows with just about everything in-between covered. The pounding Thunder Song and mournful While We Were Sleeping are always highlights but you should also be prepared to hold back your emotions, as he’s likely to bring out his touching rendition of Prince’s Sometimes It Snows In April. Always a joy to see live, the intimate confines of the Surf Cafe is perhaps one of the perfect venues to see Hyde at his best.

Barry Hyde plays at the Tynemouth Surf Cafe on Thursday 1st October.
