The world’s most prestigious mountain film festival is on tour in the UK for the sixth year in a row, arriving at the Whitley Bay Playhouse for two nights of high drama, extreme action, and breath-taking cinematography showcasing the very best in short film and documentaries showcasing mountain culture, sports, and the environment.

Originally launched in 1976 as The Banff Festival of Mountain Films, the very best films entered in the annual event leave Canada to go on tour, offering a chance for people around the world to follow today’s finest adventurers and explorers on their extraordinary expeditions, feel the fear of intense, adrenaline-fueled sports, and see various other beautiful and thought-provoking pieces of work, all capturing the awesome beauty and transcendence of the great outdoors.

This year includes two unique and entirely different film programmes – RED and BLUE – which see the world’s best film makers and accomplished outdoor heroes coming together to celebrate adventure, the environment, and mountain culture.

The RED programme incudes Afterglow (Banff Edit), Danny MacAskill: The Ridge, Drawn, Into the Empty Quarter, Mending the Line, Sufferfest 2, Sundog, and Touch. The BLUE programme includes All My Own Stunts, Into the Ditch, Arctic Swell, Sculpted in Time: the Wise Man, Tashi and the Monk, Unrideables, Valley Uprising: Stonemasters, and Wild Women: Faith Dickey.

A eclectic mix of high-adrenaline action and thought-provoking films about mountain culture lies in wait, and with other dates in London, Truro, Exeter, Bristol, and Keswick all selling out, mountainheads should snap their tickets up quick to make sure they see the very best of the mothership festival.

The Banff Film Festival comes to Whitley Bay Playhouse on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th May.
