Reliably informed

Baker Island earned a lot of plaudits for their debut single You Are A Cathedral last year, and rightly so because it was one of the most enjoyable bits of quirky pop music to come out of the North East in recent months. They return with follow-up Spanish Trails, which also features members of The Wave Pictures, Cauls and Pale Man Made, and is perhaps even better than its predecessor. Coming on like a sweeter, shyer take on British Sea Power’s poppy moments, it solidifies Baker Island’s status as one of the North East’s creative powerhouses. With an album on the horizon this summer as well as their new semi-regular live night Stay Critical Or Die, it’s going to be a busy year for them. The second instalment of Stay Critical will feature London noise-poppers Witching Waves, brilliant North East lo-fi punks Rice Milk, and Baker Island themselves at The Head of Steam in Newcastle on Wednesday 8th April. It looks set to be a pretty great night, and at a mere four quid it’s definitely worth catching.

Baker Island release Spanish Trails this month. They play Head of Steam, Newcastle on Wednesday 8th April.
