This year’s AV festival, taking place from Saturday 3rd until Saturday 31st March, is the second to be curated under the theme Meanwhile, What About Socialism and again takes its framework from Orwell’s Road To Wigan Pier. As festival director Rebecca Shatwell points out in the programme, a lot has changed politically in the two years since the last festival – the rise of Corbyn and a Labour Party that has perhaps reconnected with its socialist roots, the horrifying ascendancy of Trump and the Brexit debacle, among other things.

If the last festival took a historical approach, this second part concentrates on the future and does so with AV’s typical eclectic blend of art, cinema and discussion. Taking place throughout March, the festival follows a structure familiar from previous years: an opening weekend of events, talks and screenings; a weekend focussing on cinema; and finally some discussions that examine the festival and further consider next steps. The festival will be spread across 10 venues in the Newcastle and Gateshead area with many of the exhibitions running for the entire span of the festival.
