To celebrate new Sunderland culture venue the Athenaeum Building, Breeze Creatives have lined up a series of events under the title Athenaeum Nights including an exhibition and an improvisational project of dance, music and visuals, all taking place on consecutive Thursdays from Thursday 10th until Thursday 24th November.
First up it’s Dylan Shields’, The Fall Of The Rebel Angels, which runs from Thursday 10th until Sunday 13th November. The artist who predominantly focuses on sculpture explores the relationship between art history and its context in modern society, highlighting the forgotten narratives of old masters is the perfect person to launch the new creative space. Using re-cycled cardboard and parcel tape he produces impressive work that is original but still with a familiar quality.
Coinciding with the switching on of the city’s Christmas lights on Thursday 17th November is Joseph Swan And Photography In Sunderland; a celebration of his story and Sunderland itself in a combination of learning and entertainment, spotlighting the inventor of the incandescent light bulb.
It’s all brought to a close on Thursday 24th November with Babble: Three Legged Chair. Starting with a participatory workshop, attendees are invited to play and explore the artistic process. This all flows into a performance by Cooking With Faye. The evening will then conclude with a performance of CHURCH by Charlie Dearnley and Sean Cotterill (commissioned by Dance City) which utilises bespoke interactive technologies, dance and spoken word, and is a fitting end to an ambitious trio of events.
