“Art can’t liberate us on its own: we need fundamental change in society.” Art & Liberation is an exhibition at Newcastle’s Holy Biscuit (Tuesday 4th-Wednesday 19th September), which sets out to grapple with one of the most difficult topics of the modern age: mental health.

The installation is being organised by Chilli Studios’ Head & Tales project, which has been working hard to recognise and explore North East experiences with mental health issues, hoping to weave these integral individual stories into our regional heritage.

Art & Liberation will showcase sculptures, sketches and paintings by people who have faced and are facing mental health issues, uncovering the true, unapologetic accounts of life with mental illness. With the stigma surrounding mental health issues as unyielding as ever, and especially with the current tirade against our health systems making it all the more difficult to seek the help so many people need, raising awareness of these struggles is more important now than it ever has been. Using art to reveal these hidden stories may help to one day allow for a more open and accessible society which people with hidden disabilities need in order to succeed and survive.
