Amy Winehouse was probably one of the best talents in the recent history of British music. Her often heart-breaking and beautiful voice – reminiscent of the greatest soul singers, and particularly the legendary Billie Holliday – earned her countless awards, critical acclaim and a legion of fans. Unfortunately, like many famous musicians before her, Winehouse also lead an extremely troubled life. Dogged by problems with drink and drugs, embroiled in an often turbulent relationship with her husband and often falling in with the wrong crowd, she tragically died at 27 from an overdose, robbing the world of her perfectly formed music.

BAFTA-Award winning director Asif Kapadia – best known for the stunning Senna – has the rather unenviable task of taking a look at Winehouse’s life and balancing the amazing highs of her music career with the unbelievable lows of her personal life. Featuring unseen footage o Winehouse and unreleased songs, the film is a touching tribute to one of modern music’s biggest icons that’s sympathetic and heart-breaking.

The screening Amy on Tuesday 30th June is a particularly special occasion, as the preview will be beamed directly from the London Gala Premiere to the cinema, featuring an introduction from the red carpet, and a post-film celebration of Winehouse’s life and legacy with Kapadia and special guests. making it a truly unmissable event.

Amy comes to the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle on Tuesday 30th June.
