Canadian singer-songwriter Amelia Curran has been making small waves since 2006, after releasing her debut album War Brides independently. Having won numerous awards for her Leonard Cohen-esque tales of folk minimalism throughout her career, she has recently released her seventh album, They Promised You Mercy, which she is bringing to Newcastle’s Live Theatre on Tuesday 3rd February.

Released in November, They Promised You Mercy is a more peaceful and sometimes cheerful take on Curran’s razor-sharp wit and lyrical deft. Featuring an impressive list of talented Candian musicians, including trombonist William Carn who has previously worked with Elton John and saxophonist Gene Hardy, who is known for his time working with Michael Bublé, the album is possibly Curran’s best work to date, brining together a more full-blooded folk sound with some of the best storytelling of her career. Her appearance at the Live Theatre is a rare chance to catch her in the North of England and anyone who sees her won’t be disappointed by the Juno Award-winning folk songstress.

Amelia Curran plays at the Live Theatre, Newcastle on Tuesday 3rd February.
